Frontier Canada frontier-trel.co.uk / canada

About this trip:

John Cabot had set sail looking for a new trade way to Asia, when he landed in Cape Bonista. Clearly he felt this waste poor area could provide this, so he required it for its potential and so began the rise of the British Empire.

Newfoundland is the most easterly point in North America and was Britain’s first overseas colony (殖民地). In 1949 it became part of Canada. It’s about the size of England and Craig’s journey by camper lorry or RV (Recreational Vehicle休闲车), took in just a all part of the island called the Bonista Peninsula.

First stop was the tiny fishing port of Keels to store up for the journey ahead. There’s a long standing love relationship between Newfoundlanders and cod (鳕鱼). The seas off the Newfoundland coast were once the richest cod fishing grounds in the world, attracting fishermen from all over Europe. Many people settled, building these coastal villages known locally as outports.

The view over a valley of a tiny village with thatched (草盖的) roof cottages around a church; a drive through a narrow village street lined with thatched cottages painted pink or white; the sight over the rolling hills of a pretty collection of thatched farm buildings—these are still mon sights in parts of England. Most people will agree that the thatched roof is an extremely important part of the attraction of the English countryside.

Thatching is in fact the oldest of all the building crafts (工艺) practiced in the British Isles. Although thatch has always been used for cottages and farm buildings, it was once used for castles and churches, too.

Thatching is a craft which often runs in families. The craft of thatching as it is practiced today has changed very little since the Middle Ages. Over 800 full-time thatchers are worked in England and Wales today, keeping and renewing the old roofs as well as thatching newer houses. Many property owners choose thatch not only for its beauty but also they know it will keep them cool in summer and warm in winter.

In fact, if we look at developing countries, over half the world lives under thatch, but they all do it in different ways. People in developing countries are often unwilling to go back to traditional materials and would prefer modern buildings. However, they may lack the money to allow them to import (进口) the necessary materials. Their temporary (暂时的) mud houses with thatched roofs of wild grasses often only last six months. Thatch which has been done in the British way lasts from twenty to sixty years, and is an effective defense against the heat.

47. This passage is mainly about ____ .

A. narrow streets of all towns in the Middle Ages

B. rolling hills with farm buildings in England

C. special and unusual churches and castles in the British Isles

D. a special and unusual kind of building in Great Britain 48. Thatched houses are still preferred because of ____ .

A. their building crafts and fort B. their great strength

C. their easy care and repair D. their cheap materials

49. People in developing countries also live under thatch because ____ .

A. thatched cottages are tourist attractions

B. thatched roof houses are the cheapest

C. thatch is an effective defense against the heat

D. they like thatched cottages better than other buildings

50. It can be inferred from the passage that ____ .

A. only the less fortunate British love thatched cottages

B. thatching was first started by the English people

C. the English are the best thatchers in the world

D. most thatched houses in England are on hillsides

[2] In 1907 a young German schoolmaster had an idea which changed this state of affairs. He decided to turn his little schoolhouse into a dormitory for the summer holidays. Anyone who brought his sleeping bag and cooking equipment along could stay there for a very all amount of money. The idea was a success. A few years later the schoolhouse was far too all to hold so many young people who wanted to stay there. So, a dormitory was set up in an old castle nearby. This was the first Youth Hostel (旅舍). [3] Today young students and workers of every country can meet in the hostels and get to know each other. Some spend a week or more in the same hostel, seeing the surrounding sights and meeting the people of the area.
